Wood

"Wood" is a slang term from American cannabis culture. In cannabis terminology, it most often refers to a cigar wrap made from natural tobacco leaf and is closely associated with the cigar brand Backwoods, which is where the nickname "woods" comes from.

The word can refer both to the wrap itself and to a rolled cigar made with it. A related term is "fronto leaf", which describes a whole, dried tobacco leaf used as a wrap. What sets a wood apart from thinner wraps is the rustic, uneven look of the leaf.

Wood is a good example of how brand and product names turn into slang. The same thing has happened with Zig-Zag, where a brand of rolling paper has become part of everyday cannabis vocabulary, and with terms like roach that describe items rather than the plant itself.

Wood in hip-hop culture

The term spread widely through American hip-hop from the 1990s onwards, where "woods" became a recurring word in lyrics and street slang. From there it moved into popular culture and online communities, alongside other slang terms such as loud and exotic.

Wood is not a technical or botanical term. It describes a type of wrap and says nothing about strain, origin or quality.
