What Is the Difference Between Hash and Marijuana?
Hash and marijuana both come from the cannabis plant, but the terms do not describe the same product. The fundamental difference lies in which parts of the plant are used and how the plant material is subsequently processed.
Marijuana typically refers to the dried flowers and plant material of the cannabis plant, while hash is made by collecting and processing the plant’s resin and trichomes. This gives the two products different structures, appearances and production processes.
What Is Marijuana?
Marijuana is a traditional term for dried plant material from the cannabis plant. It is particularly associated with the plant’s flowers, also known as buds or top buds.
Small trichomes are found on the surface of the flower. These are microscopic glandular structures that produce resin and contain a large proportion of the plant’s cannabinoids and terpenes.
When the flowers are harvested, dried and sometimes cured, the plant structure itself is preserved. Marijuana can therefore typically be recognised by features such as leaves, flower structure, pistils and trichome coverage. The term is particularly common internationally and in everyday cannabis terminology. In Denmark, words such as cannabis, weed, pot and top buds are also used when describing the plant material.

What Is Hash?
Hash is a processed cannabis product where the focus is no longer on the whole flower, but on the resin and trichomes found on the plant.
During production, the resin-rich material is separated or collected from the cannabis plant. The material can then be processed and pressed into a more compact mass. This is why hash often has a dense structure and is sold in forms such as pieces or slabs rather than individual top buds.
There are also several different production methods. Traditional hash can, for example, be produced using dry sifting, while Ice Water Hash uses cold water and ice to separate trichomes from the plant material. Hash is therefore not a particular cannabis plant or strain, but a product category that can be made from different types of cannabis.

Hash and Marijuana Are Produced Differently
The clearest difference between hash and marijuana is found in the treatment of the plant after harvest. With marijuana, the cannabis flower is largely preserved as plant material. The flowers are harvested and typically undergo drying and curing, but the finished product still consists of the flower itself.
Hash production goes one step further. Here, the plant’s trichomes and resin are separated from the rest of the material and can then be collected or pressed. The difference can therefore be summarised as follows:
| Marijuana | Hash | |
|---|---|---|
| Raw material | Cannabis flowers | Resin and trichomes from cannabis |
| Structure | Dried top buds | Collected or pressed material |
| Processing | Primarily drying and curing | Separation and further processing |
| Appearance | Green/brown flowers and plant material | Often brownish, golden or darker pieces/slabs |
| Term | Plant material | Processed cannabis product |
Why Do Hash and Marijuana Look Different?
The difference in production can also be seen directly in the products. Marijuana retains the flower’s natural structure. Depending on the strain and cultivation method, the top buds may be compact or more airy and can feature different shades of green, pistils and visible trichomes.
Hash no longer has the same recognisable flower structure. When resin and trichomes are collected and processed, they form a denser mass whose colour and consistency can vary depending on the raw material and production method.
You may therefore come across everything from light and relatively loose pollen hash to darker and more compact types. Terms such as La Mousse, Bubble Hash and Dry Sift are used for different products and production methods within the hash category.
Is Marijuana the Same as Cannabis?
Not quite. Cannabis is the broader term and refers to the plant itself as well as serving as an umbrella term for products derived from it. Marijuana, on the other hand, is typically used for the dried flowers and other plant material. Hash is also a cannabis product, but is made from the plant’s resin and trichomes.
This means that both marijuana and hash can fall under the broader category of cannabis, even though the two terms describe different product forms.
It is also worth noting that cannabis terminology varies between countries and communities. Words such as weed, pot, ganja and grass can therefore be used in different ways and, in some contexts, as overlapping terms for cannabis flower.
Do Hash and Marijuana Contain the Same Cannabinoids?
Both marijuana and hash come from the cannabis plant and can therefore contain many of the same cannabinoids, including THCA and CBD. However, the specific cannabinoid profile depends on factors such as the plant, genetics and production method.
Hash is produced with a focus on the resin-rich parts of the plant, where cannabinoids and terpenes are found in high concentrations. Marijuana, by contrast, consists of the dried flower itself with its natural plant and trichome structure preserved.
You therefore cannot determine a product’s exact contents solely from whether it is called hash or marijuana. Laboratory testing and third-party analysis provide a more precise picture of the cannabinoid profile.
Hash and Marijuana Are Two Different Forms of Cannabis
Although hash and marijuana originate from the same plant, they are two different product forms.
Marijuana essentially consists of dried cannabis flowers in which the plant’s original structure remains visible. Hash is produced by separating and processing resin and trichomes from the plant.
The difference therefore primarily concerns raw material, structure and production. At the same time, there is considerable variation within both categories because genetics, cultivation and production methods can differ from one product to another.
